The best method of advertising is word of mouth; I had actually seen the contractors work in person. He did a wonderful job on a huge 3 bathrooms remodel, but could he do attics?
Luckily he had a website where I could check out his other works as well as get a feel of his personality. One thing you should remember you will be seeing this person day in and out for months, so you better pick the right man for the job.
To make my vision convey better I made a spec sheet and printed out my layout on what I expected the outcome to be for this remodel project. I also provide pictures I found on the Internet of other attic remodels that I liked.
Try to look for pictures of remodels that you like, if possible find pictures of the style or type of house that you have for a better visual tool that you can hand your contractor.
The first meeting we had with our contractor was he was here to measure the space and discuss a start date. Be prepared to wait months before the job starts. In my case we had to wait over 3 months before we could start the remodel.
So here are the tips to finding the right contractor for your remodel job:
- Ask around, if possible see if you can see his work up and personal
- Visit the contractors website (if possible read the customer testimonials)
- Make sure he is license and have all the necessary things in order so he can start on your project
- Be prepared to not finish on your original deadline, my deadline was moved 3 times
- Interview the contractor in person find out if having pets would be a problem, find out what his needs are to make working at your home enjoyable (in our case he wanted a safe place to put his tools and supplies)
- Establish a daily time schedule that can work for both of you (in the last 2 weeks he worked on weekends to meet the final deadline)
I hope these tips where helpful…now go out and ask around to find your contractor.
Ok so what if I don’t have friends that had work done? You can always try online grading sites such as Angies List and Service Magic to find your contractor. Personally I have never used these sites so I can comment on them.
